“Regard your soldiers as your children, and they will follow you into the deepest valleys. Look upon them as your own beloved sons, and they will stand by you even unto death.” -Sun Tzu

Throughout history, there have been numerous examples of successful military leadership, as well as failures. Successful military leadership necessitates a leader who serves as a role model and commands the loyalty of his soldiers.

The ancient Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu once wrote in one of his treatises: “If a commander treats his soldiers as he treats his sons, or if a commander loves his men as he loves his children, his men will be prepared to die for him.”

To achieve successful military leadership, a leader must establish emotional bonds with his soldiers. There is a saying among soldiers worldwide that goes, “If you take care of your men, your men will take care of you.”

From personal experience, it is challenging to deceive one’s soldiers. Scientific studies in psychology have shown the existence and widespread application of nonverbal communication in human relations. Subordinates in a group or unit can sense the seriousness or lack thereof in their leader.

Just like a dog can understand and feel human attitudes and intentions, soldiers can also perceive their leader’s true feelings through body language and behavior. Microexpressions, which are subconscious movements, play a significant role in conveying one’s true emotions.

Recent studies have focused on the accuracy of microexpression analysis, with police forces and intelligence services conducting specialized training to assess whether someone is lying. In a military environment, honesty and sincerity are crucial, especially in combat units, as a dishonest or insincere leader will lose the respect of his troops.

In summary, a successful leader must be earnest and honest in the presence of his soldiers. This authenticity is vital for maintaining respect and loyalty within a military unit.
