I have known Suryo Prabowo since my time as a cadet. He graduated from the Armed Forces Academy (AKABRI) in 1976, making him two years my junior. Suryo was awarded the Adhi Makayasa, which is presented to the highest achieving cadet by the Academy in the same year. He possesses exceptional intelligence, a militant spirit, and deep patriotism, likely influenced by his father who was a Colonel in the Army during the ’45 Generation.

Throughout his career from lieutenant to captain, major, and eventually Brigadier General, Suryo was always actively engaged in field operations. Even in leadership roles such as Deputy Governor in East Timor and Deputy Commander of East Timor Military Resort Command (KOREM), he stayed in the field during critical moments. Notably, he was the last high-ranking TNI officer to depart East Timor after the referendum, lowering the final Indonesian flag in the region.

Despite his intelligence and dedication, Suryo faced criticism for being perceived as a know-it-all due to his proactive nature in offering advice to improve the Armed Forces organization or resolve issues.

A straightforward and courageous leader, Suryo Prabowo stands out as one of the brightest generals of our era. His shared values and commitment to Indonesia, influenced by the ’45 Generation and his AKABRI class ’78, have fostered a strong bond between us.
