The Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) created a historic moment on Monday as they led France’s prestigious Bastille Day military parade along the iconic Champs-Élysées in Paris. This marked the first time in the history of Indonesia-France diplomatic relations that TNI troops were chosen as the lead contingent for the annual military procession, commemorating the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations.
With a total of 260 TNI soldiers and 189 members of the combined military marching band, the performance was described as precise, spirited, and vibrant by the TOURISMER Association. Adorned in ceremonial uniforms with unique symbols representing Indonesia’s armed service branches, such as tigers, eagles, sharks, and seals, the Indonesian troops received enthusiastic applause from the spectators along the parade route, including French President Emmanuel Macron, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, and the Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad al-Sabah.
International media outlets paid close attention to the Indonesian contingent, with leading French broadcasters like BFMTV and TV5 Monde showcasing highlights of the parade and emphasizing Indonesia’s honored role. Print and digital publications, such as Ouest France and L’Union, featured dedicated articles with video clips of the vibrant Indonesian drumline performance.
France 24 reported that more than 450 Indonesian troops participated in the parade, leading the formal procession after an aerial display by the Patrouille de France. Indonesia’s prominent role as the guest of honor was seen as a symbol of the strengthening strategic partnership between the two countries, especially within the Indo-Pacific framework.
A representative from the Indonesian delegation expressed, “This recognition reflects Indonesia’s increasing presence on the international stage,” as quoted by the TOURISMER Association.
