Merah Putih Village Cooperative: Empowering Rural Communities

The establishment of the Koperasi Desa/Kelurahan (Village/Urban Village Cooperative) Merah Putih under President Prabowo Subianto’s leadership signifies a significant milestone in enhancing rural economies and uplifting the welfare of village communities across Indonesia. The initiative, as highlighted by Adita Irawati, a Senior Advisor at the Presidential Communication Office (PCO), represents a shift towards village-based national development and emphasizes the importance of local resource management. This program, introduced during Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day celebrations, is viewed as a crucial step towards achieving economic independence for rural residents, granting them autonomy in economic matters.

Through the Kopdes Merah Putih initiative, villages are encouraged to move away from relying solely on social aid towards fostering sustainable economic empowerment. Challenges faced by villages and urban neighborhoods such as inadequate storage for fish catches, high indebtedness among micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), lack of essential healthcare facilities, and limited access to cooperative services underscore the urgent need for intervention. President Prabowo’s launch of 80,081 Kopdes Merah Putih cooperatives aims to address these pressing issues and promote self-reliant, inclusive, and equitable economic growth.

The strategic implementation of the program aligns with the Asta Cita vision, placing cooperatives as key drivers of rural economic development. By establishing these cooperatives, the government aims to generate employment opportunities, encourage entrepreneurship, and bolster local production centers sustainably. President Prabowo envisions a streamlined distribution system that ensures essential goods reach residents directly, at reasonable prices, through a transparent and fair framework.

For Dedi Nurendi, the head of Kopdes Merah Putih in Cileunyi Wetan village, Bandung regency, West Java, the program has already delivered tangible benefits to the community. By providing easier access to basic necessities and offering financial services that deter residents from falling prey to informal lenders, the cooperative has proven to be a vital resource for economic stability. Dedi encourages community members to participate in cooperatives as a means of fostering mutual cooperation and addressing local economic needs collectively.
